Statistical Models in S
Published in Library Binding by CRC Press (October, 1991)
Authors: John M. Chambers and Hastie
Average review score:

This is "the white book", an essential S-PLUS reference.
S programmers refer to this as "the white book", and it is a key reference for understanding the methods implemented in several of S-PLUS' high-end statistical functions, including 'lm()', predict()', 'design()', 'aov()', 'glm()', 'gam()', 'loess()', 'tree()', 'burl.tree()', 'nls()' and 'ms()'.

It's apparently out of print, but it shouldn't be.

Even with the recent arrival of S-PLUS releases that incorporate S version 4 and many of the ideas discussed in "the green book" (<>, also by John Chambers), this classic S reference is an indispensable tool for the serious statistician. It needs to be reissued--with a white cover, of course.

Here are the titles of the chapters, for reference:

1. An Appetizer

2. Statistical Models

3. Data for Models

4. Linear Models

5. Analysis of Variance: Designed Experiments

6. Generalized Linear Models

7. Generalized Additive Models

8. Local Regression Models

9. Tree-Based Models

10. Nonlinear Models

A. Classes and Methods: Object-oriented Programming in S

B. S Functions and Classes

Story of the Stone (The Dream of the Red Chamber)
Published in Textbook Binding by Indiana University Press (June, 1979)
Author: Hsueh-Chin Tsao
Average review score:

...the camera is a delicate paintbrush...
"In the hands of Linda Ching the camera is a delicate paintbrush. The images she has created to tell the tale of "Story of the Stone" summons the senses--like delicate water paintings, opalescent colors emerge. In silky browns and beiges she arouses ecstatic figures; a wistful woman is caught in a gossamer mirror; a twig soars alone, overlaid in sunlit leaves. A fresh new look at an old Chinese masterpiece." -- Moana Tregaskis

Great Work!
I have read many English versions of the Story of the Stone, yet David Hawke's translation is by far the best. If you have decided to read this great novel in English, this is the one you want to choose.

Studies in the Sermon on the Mount
Published in Paperback by Chosen Books Pub Co (September, 1985)
Author: Oswald Chambers
Average review score:

The Sermon on the Mount becomes real.
This incredible little book opens the door to the Sermon on the Mount. Chambers emphasizes that Christ's teachings are not just good words to live by - but a radical view of life that goes against our natural way of doing things. He makes that point throughout that the only way to live the life Jesus outlines is by knowing Him and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Chambers takes of the religious trappings of this teaching and covers it in a way that makes it real and meaningful.

Sibelius-A Modern Master
These two symphonies are the greatest of a modern composer. They are deep, emotional, and very melodic.

Great for Young Musicians to Study From!
Hi,
I heard the San Francisco Symphony preform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Opus 17, Little Russian, recently and instantly fell in love with it.Though the shortest of Tchaikovsky's symphonies this is not a " Little Russian" symphony as distinct from a big one. The nickname refers to Little Russsia, an affectionate name for Ukraine. Anyways, after hearing it, I had a great interest to see the music to see how it was like and just to study it, so I bought at Amazon. com. It is really great: it has large unabridged, full score, Dover republication of the first three symphonies of Tchaikovsky. It's measures 9 3/8 x 12 1/4 which makes it really quite easy to read. I suggest that anyone serious in studying music should buy this because it's a great book to learn from!Nice cover artwork ,too! = )
Contents within this book:
Symphony No. 1 in G minor , Op. 13," Winter Day Dreams"
Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op 17, "Little Russian"
Symphony no. 3 in D major, Op. 29, " Polish"

Symphonies Nos. 6 and 7 in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1994)

ARGH MATEY
although his ninth symphony was probably the most anticipated, his seventh is probably the most highly regarded of his symphonies. it is full of the angst that consumed him at the time of its inception...

Symphony No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 27, in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1999)
Authors: Serge Rachmaninoff and Sergey Rachmaninoff
Average review score:

A marvelous bargain, after some cutting and pasting...
The full score of Rachmaninoff's most popular symphony is a wonderful bargain at Dover's price. (The competing version by Boosey & Hawkes is more than twice as expensive, and hard to find outside of music stores, unlike the popular Dover series.) A problem: a production error resulted in the reprinting of the music on page 73 on page 78; the solution, photocopy page 110 (whose 8 bars are identical to the missing page) and paste it over page 78. Dover has been alerted by me about this error, but apparently errant copies are still in circulation. Also, be alerted that many recordings of this symphony make significant cuts in the music, especially in the outer movements, so be alert if you are using this to follow a recording!
